Chloe update

Chloe has settled in very well,
she's very happy and is seen regularly by the Dog rehoming Coordinator as she only lives down the road!
She loves her walks and attention,
she's such a gentle loving dog
and as can be seen by the pics she is very happy!

Lucy update

I've been meaning to send an update on Lucy and photos!
I completed the contract I was doing now
(and taking this month - at least!
off to spend time with the Little
Ones/Terrible Twosome!)
Lucy is such a sweetheart! we just love her so much!
she loves Stan! the pair of them are so good together!
sometimes it's like they're joined at the hip!
she doesn't have a favorite with one of us - just loves Bryan,
Myself and Ade equally! Lucys' tail is always wagging like Stan!
just when they're walking or standing!

Lucy's given Stan a new lease of life! they're crazy together!
they have their daily walk which is longer
(as in we walk up to the woods and back rather than driving)
and the woods or up to the rec. is their standard walk
and it's lovely watching them off lead together
running around together
and chasing each other! (with the rec.
if it's just one of us walking
them we put them on long-line leads as their recall
isn't the best outside
and unlike the woods/fields there can be other Dogs around on lead
and I can't trust Stan and Lucy together with their loopyness
like I could Toby and Stan.
It's the muppet show though! with myself playing lead role!
I try to keep them away from the few trees
but they manage to get the lines tangled around a tree!
or just tangle them up together! they're full of energy
together
but they'll also have a good sleep, re-charge -
and then they're off again!

At home Lucy loves the garden - if she's not asleep
she wants to be outside! either chasing Stan - it's lovely,
they do play-bow and 'musical statues' with each other
and run in and outside together! or she sunbathes!
where it's hotter weather we have to keep an eye on her
and call her in as she'd spend the whole day sunbathing
if we let her!
and with her black coat she gets hot
and we have to be more careful
with the skin on her back. I've checked
and there's always shade
whenever the Sun is moving but she's a sun-seeker!
Lucy also likes playing with us -
playing chase is her favorite game!
but she's also very cuddly,
she wasn't so keen on being picked-up at first
but is comfortable now
and will jump on us for a cuddle and loves fusses.
Her and Stan are cuddly! they'll occasionally share
the same bed
which is so sweet! instead of just swapping beds!
when we took them camping they layed together
and used each other as pillows!

She's starting (like Stan!) to love the sound of her own voice!
and barks at people walking past her garden
and will bark in the house if she hears someone
outside her house or a knock at the door!
it's lovely that she knows
this is her Home and she's going nowhere!
Lucy still doesn't play with toys, she's just not interested.
She copies everything else Stan does! I think she sees Stan
(and us!) as her toys! With Stan toys are his love!
and he loves that he has his toys
and Lucy lets him play with all of hers as well!

Lucy of course loves her food!
it's difficult but we're being disciplined -
I'm actually the strictest one!
She had her first weigh-in Saturday and has gone from
20.1Kilos
when she was first weighed to 19.6Kilos the Vet was
around at the time so weighed Lucy and filled in her weight-loss club chart!
and said it's good progress and that he doesn't want
to see a quick weight loss.
We're going to keep her weighed on a monthly basis
even when she reaches her ideal weight of 17-18Kilos
as it's a free club and she can go in and be weighed anytime
because I know once she's at her ideal weight
we'll be more relaxed which Lucy will know
and 'work' her beautiful face and big brown eyes
and we'll give in on an extra treat!

Elsa ( Angel) update
( update 1 )
Dear Elsa has had a good night, slept well in the utility room
which is now her room, been for her morning walk
with Darcey (both very well behaved),
had her breakfast and is now learning to sunbathe
as you will see from the photos.
She follows Darcey in everything she does
which makes the loo routine much easier.
Most pleasing was this morning when Mark walked
through the gate after his night shift.
Elsa's initial reaction was anxiety, her jaw started going
and she was a bit frightened.  However, Darcey was up
and greeting Mark so Elsa thought 'oh, that's what to do then'
and did the same.  She is very comfortable with Mark.
Darcey and Elsa aren't interacting at all at the moment, they kind of just co-exist.  I am sure that will change and they will learn to play.

( update 2 )
I am not surprised she wasn't raced!
It's enough to get her off her bed and out the door.
I thought Darcey was lazy, Elsa beats her hands down.
A week on and its a slow process but we want them to take their own time.
They have not taken much notice of each other
although Darcey started to get quite territorial and trying to 'reserve'
all her places in the house.
I began to wonder if she'd be putting towels out on sun loungers!
Elsa then started finding her spots, including her new bed ,
which Darcey tried to populate as well.
They had a few 'moments' where Darcey warned Elsa off,
flashpoints tend to be sofa's and Mark.
Darcey has always been a Daddy's girl so he has to be careful
to ensure an even distribution of affection.
Elsa is totally cool with Mark, doesn't shrink from him in the slightest.
Anyway, this went on and we could tell that the worm would turn, Elsa built up more confidence and stood her ground more and more when having spats with Darcey.  Sure enough, Darcey is now sporting a battle scar on her nose where Elsa put her in her place.
State of play now, is that Darcey wants to play with Elsa,
but Elsa is ignoring her.
They occupy opposite ends of the house,
but last night was a step forward as they both relaxed and slept
(as opposed to lying with their eyes fixed on each other)
in the front room whilst we were in there.

They still sleep seperately at night with only a baby gate between them
so that they can have contact if they want to.
Food is a big issue of course, Elsa is so greedy and whilst
we feed them

in seperate areas, just preparing the bowls can be a flashpoint as
Elsa has no manners!

However, she is gradually learning that she doesn't graze
and following me around the kitchen will not get her any scraps.

We haven't found her counter surfing (as yet!) either.

They love walking together, no issues there,
when one finds an interesting 'sniff', the other is straight in there even though I thought this might cause a problem.
They love running together - Darcey now has a friend who is faster
than her which was a shock as I don't think we have ever met
a dog as fast as Darcey let alone faster!
Elsa is so funny when she runs, she doesn't have much control
of her legs, they fly everywhere.
When she goes down the bottom of the garden in the morning
for a wee, she loves to run back up the slope towards me
and it is just so comical.
Elsa seems to have adopted me, which is lovely.
Darcey has always been Mark's dog as was our dog before,
so I feel that I have a new, best friend.
We love her so much, such a sweet and gentle dog
(apart from that bite on Darcey's nose!!!)
and everyone in the village is getting to know her.
Our dog walker/sitter loves her and Elsa is very comfortable
with her as well.
I have also attached a photo of them both sun-bathing
after a walk down to the marshes outside our local pub.

Tilly update

I thought that you would like an update on Tilly
the 10 year old cat, who was with the RSPCA
at Windyway for nearly 9 months.

We adopted her in February 2007
and although she struggled to fit in at first,
she eventually settled in as the only cat.
She likes sleeping on the bed and follows us round
(especially if we open the fridge!).
She's on a diet at the moment and she's really looking thinner
and has the energy of a much younger cat.
Thanks very much.
Clare & David.

Gizmo with his new sister Lucy

I thought i would just send you a quick update on Gizmo,
he has settled into our home lovely,
everyone loves him (except the cat!) and he is very spoilt!
he is fully house trained now with the occasional accident
which is fantastic, he sleeps all night in his basket
in Helena's bedroom and is as good as gold.
He loves going out for walks and is learning his name
and how to play fetch,
he is very greedy and would never stop eating
if we did'nt watch him.
Lucy absolutly loves him and shares all her toys
and her basket with him its really nice to see.
We have registered him at the vets
and he has been in for his first check up and everything is fine.
I just want to say thank you again for all your help
and I have forwarded a few photos.

Thanks again, Lesley.

PENNY'S IN HEAVEN

Two years in a wonderful home prove the worth of older animal adoption

Penny was old when she was adopted two years ago by a Macclesfield resident who has the view that aged rescue cats deserve every chance at a new life and a new home. Harry, another branch rescue puss, followed Penny to the same home shortly after. Needless-to-say the branch appreciates everyone who is willing to adopt our animals and give them a forever home, but taking on an oldie demonstrates
something even more special.

Penny gained a wonderful, caring home and two years of TLC
and in return gave her new found family much before going to animal heaven. That adopter's news of Penny's passing
and some pictures follow - Harry the second oldie is the ginger cat!

(10 Feb 08)
"I thought I would email you, as you did our home visit and I hoped you might remember our cat Penny! We took her on almost exactly two years ago – she was very old, hyperthyroid etc.

Anyway I just wanted to let you know that we’ve had to have her put to sleep today, although to be honest she was just about gone when the vet arrived. She became poorly yesterday with the runs, and was a bit glum, though she seemed a bit better this morning. We took her to the vets this a.m. where she seemed worse, I brought her home to give her a day or two’s chance with the treatment given to us by the vets, but she just nosedived very rapidly, and I asked the vet to come out to let her go this afternoon.

Anyway over the past two years she has continued to amaze and mystify Bond Street Vets with her scrawny, raggedy self,
various odd complaints and niggles (and deeply unco-operative nature!) but determination to carry on going
she was skin and bone but had good quality of life,
she just wouldn’t put any weight on!! But she could well have been absolutely ancient, and she just didn’t have anything left in her to fight with. She had a good couple of years with us though, and was frequently found in front of the fire, the radiators, and in our bed too

We still have Harry, the big ginger cat who we adopted a few days after Penny. He’s in fine form, though he still insists on getting into scraps at the grand old age of nearly 15. All his trips to the vets are self-inflicted!

There was a story about them on the branch’s website News page shortly after we adopted them, I don’t know if you remember. I’ve attached a couple of the pictures that were used,
apologies if they clog up your inboxes!

As we now have a baby, we won’t adopt another cat just now,
as we still have Harry and we think that attention-wise
it’s fairer to him to keep him as a singleton at the moment. I doubt he’d be thrilled by any more additions to the family anyway!

But unless I can twist A’s arm into having a dog
 (I work part time now)
I fully intend to keep adopting older cats,

so you will be hearing from us on the adoption front
at some point in the future."
