“We Have A Secret” Poem

We have a secret, you and I that no one else shall know,
for who but I can see you lie each night in fire glow?

And who but I can reach my hand before we go to bed
and feel the living warmth of you and touch your silken head?

And only I walk woodland paths and see ahead of me,
your small form racing with the wind so young again, and free.

And only I can see you swim in every brook I pass
and when I call, no one but I can see the bending grass.

Rest in Peace 5th November 2011.

Harvey was being rehomed by the RSPCA
direct from his own home, the owners felt
they couldn't give him what he needed after
starting a family. Sadly after just a few
weeks he became very poorly.

It was established he had a very aggressive
cancerous tumour in his nasal area and
sadly he had to be put to sleep.
This was a complete shock for all as he was
only 4 years old. The whole affair was tragic
especially as Harvey was a great dog with
a beautiful nature; a real credit to the breed.
Sadly finding a new home was not
meant to be, in fact a happy long life was not
meant to be.

Run free at the Bridge Harvey, you are sorely missed.

Rest in Peace Ollie 1st November 2011

Willow and her six beautiful 8 week old
kittens were abandoned in the home, left
in the garage to fend for themselves.
They came into our care but sadly the
smallest kitten named Ollie became poorly
and was taken to the vets a couple of times,
unfortunately he deteriorated rapidly and
was taken to the vet and put in a drip but
sadly didn't make it.

One of the hardest things we, especially the
fosterers, have to deal with is losing an
animal that we have taken under our wing to
protect. Even harder is losing them when
they are just babies. At least Ollie was
given a fighting chance but it just wasn't
meant to be.

Run free at the bridge Ollie x

Rest in Peace Bernard 16th October 2011.

Our 12yr old Boxer, came to us back in July where he had
spent some time at the kennels then he went into a
wonderful foster home.
His previous owners split up and he was
being kept outside which is no place for an oldie.
He needed an operation on his eye and at the same time
we had to castrate him as one testicle had never dropped,
it was a major operation due to the fact it had grown to the
size of a grapefruit inside his abdomen and was
cancerous. If only he was neutered when he was a pup
he would never have got testicular cancer and he would
still be with us now.
He recovered well from the op but he had to be taken to
the emergency vets as there was a problem with his
stitches, his abdomen was not in a good state and we
had to let him go whilst on the operating table.
It's painful for his fosterers and those who
were a part of his life as he was such a lovely gentle
affectionate boy.
He had a wonderful couple of months in our care with
his resident friend Gizmo a Staffy adopted by his fosterers.
Bernard has never had so much fun as this video shows!
We will all miss you Bernard from the bottom of our hearts xxx

Sadly on Mon, 4 Apr 2011 Bandit died whilst in his foster home.
He'd been with us for many months, he was an RTA victim
but didn't get any interest at all, then he became poorly
and only then did people start logging an interest in him but it was too late.
He was then taken off rehoming.
He passed away in his sleep curled up on the sofa,
one of his favourite spots.
Bandit had a lovely life with the other rescue cats in the foster home
and received plenty of TLC, he was a beautiful cat in all respects
and it was tragic that he never found his forever home
but I suppose in a way he did in the end.
Rest in Peace Bandit xxx

BEN Rest in Peace 17th August 2011
Ben had come into our care
because his owners simply didn't want him anymore

due to starting a new family.
Ben was such a gentle giant, incredibly affectionate, playful and fun.
Unfortunately just over a week into his stay with us he became very lame.
Xray's showed both back leg cruciate ligaments had blown
and that he also had
hip dysplacia,
the vets recommended he be put to sleep on the operating table

as due to both conditions neither could be worked on as he would not be able
to support himself due to his size and weight and it would take months of pain
and discomfort-it just would not be fair to put him through that.
Needless to say
those who spent time with him were devastated
and many tears were shed.
We
thought it only right to inform his previous owners
who of course were shocked.

We know he'd have found a new loving home
but it just wasn't meant to be.

Ben, we can see you now having fun at the bridge
and one day we'll see you again.

Blue, a labrador cross, came to us several years ago,
he was in a terrible state after being abaondoned and basically left to die,
how can anyone be so evil? He was adopted in 2007 by a lovely new Mum and Dad.
He even did some collections to help raise money for our branch so thank you
Blue from the bottom of our hearts.
Sadly after some health problems they had to let him go.
Good bye friend.
Here are some words from their daughter:
I’m sorry to say that I’ve just taken a call from my dad letting me know
that we lost Blue yesterday afternoon.
After 4 fantastic years being spoiled rotten by my parents
(and the rest of the family!)
he really struggled with arthritis last winter
and although he got better as the weather improved
he never fully regained the strength in his back legs.
Things took a serious turn for the worse over the last couple of weeks
and dad made the difficult decision that it was kinder to let him go.
It’s worth saying however, that it has hit my dad really hard
and I’ve never heard him quite so moved by an animal as I have this morning.
I wanted to let you know to see if you could pass our thanks onto everyone
in the branch who dealt with Blue during his stay with you?
I understand he was with you for some time before he was re-homed
and if you could please let everyone know that for all the upset
he experienced in his early years,
he has had all the love and attention a dog could wish for over his retirement.

Back in August 2009 a little dog called Spot came into our care via an Inspector,
he was a very scared little thing who had been beaten by his elderly owner
with his walking stick.
We were led to believe this was a regular occurance
and not only this the owners daughter stood by and did nothing.
Until one day his cries were heard and a neighbour came to his rescue.
From the day Spot came into our care; into one of our wonderful foster homes,
he knew nothing but love.
Spot you were very much loved by us, you were such a sweet, gentle
and loving little man and your foster mum was sad to see you go
but she knew you were going to a lovely home and what special people
they were too to ignore the fact you weren't a young dog.
Spot was then renamed Sam. You will not be forgotten.
Here are some words from your mum and dad:
Just to let you know that our little Sam was put to sleep on the 18th June 2011,
he had been to the vets in the last 3 weeks,we now know he was in heart failure,
the vet tried injections and tablets (he was so good taking his tablets),
cos his breathing was not to good, and he was wanting to sleep most of the time
and had little energy, then he stopped eating and even drinking it was hard for him,
he didn't want to play anymore, and would sleep for hours in his bed or on our lap,
he was slowly dieing and we had to make a very hard decision,
he keep looking at us and in his little way trying to say please mum and dad help me,
we know it was time for him to go, we had only had him for 20 months
and he was nearly 16yrs old, but he was treated like a king
and even though he had been badly treated before he came into our life,
he was happy to be with us and loved his days at the caravan at Bridlington,
going for little walks and well just having a great time,
we took him to the caravan just before he died,
not realizing it would be his last time,
its going to be very hard going to the caravan without him,
just at the moment john and i just cant face it,everybody loved him
and he had made a few pals there, young and old,
we have buried him in his garden, his favourite place,
he spent hours watching john water and weed,
even though he was nearly blind and deaf,
he would chase about like a young puppy.
Goodbye little man and thank you for all the happiness you gave us
and all the loved you showed
even though you had a rough time before you came to us,
it was clear for all to see you were a happy little soul
and gave as much love to us as we to you.
( night ,night , Little Teacake god bless )
xxxx johns nick name for you,
we know you didn't want to leave us and we did't want you to go,
your in our hearts little chap and we will never forget you darling.
Sam a true friend. so if anyone is thinking of passing by a older dog,
think again cos even though they look old
their hearts are strong and the love and enjoyment
even stronger, give an older dog a chance, we did..........

"RIP Xena 13th May 2011
We would like to say goodbye to Xenee.
Please see her
and her story on the 2010 Happy Endings page:

You were a very special lady Xenee,
you had been through so much trauma and
discomfort yet you never ever complained,
you had a strong fighting spirit
and was simply beautiful.
You will never be forgotten and we will always
rest easy knowing that you eventually had a wonderfully happy life.
Words simply cannot describe how much you meant to us.
Here are some words from your amazing Mum:
Sadly my beautiful little girl was put to sleep last Friday...
what with having arthritis, AF and then CDRM
it was all too much for her, we lost
the battle in the end and I'm devastated!!!
She was absolutely devoted to me
and would've jumped in front of a train if it meant saving me..
I have never known such a hard working committed dog before...
hence the problems we encountered when Kiah moved in.
Although in the end she had mellowed considerably
towards him and indeed on occasion it was very nice to
see her actually following his lead and doing doggie things
instead of being permanently by my side...
I wished sometimes she would've relaxed a bit
instead of always protecting me.
But I guess that was Xenie and no-one was
ever going to change her....
I will always remember the happy little face
I was met with when I went to visit her in foster n Macclesfield
with Wendy.....I fell in love with her
the first moment I saw her and that continued to grow
throughout our 11 months together.
She was my best friend, my little tomboy and I will always
miss her playful and cheeky ways..
the house is just so quiet without her!!!
All that's left to say is thank you for allowing me to adopt her
because now I realise what a truly special little dog she was
and how honoured I feel to
have been a part of her life.
I only wish it had been longer."

Stan
was siezed from his owners along with Toby some 5 years
or so ago as a cruelty case
and were successfully prosecuted for neglect.
Thankfully two very special people came along
and adopted them both together,
we didn't even want an adoption fee for Toby
due to his age as he was 17,
he is also on this page further down.
We can't thank Marie and Brian
enough for taking these gorgeous little dogs into their lives.
We know how much Stan will me missed.
We will not forget you Stan.
we had to say goodbye to little Stan early this morning.
Yesterday (Thursday 31st)
he was fine; had his breakfast, walk at midday,
dinner in the evening
and then about 11.30 in the evening
Stan was lying by my feet and I saw his head shaking,
when I checked him his eyes were flickering
and I thought it was 'just' a vestibular attack
(Kate had one of these a year ago and recovered well).

We called the emergency Vets and then took Stan in,
the Vet told us that Stan had instead had a severe stroke
and it was unlikely he would make a recovery
and the kindest thing to do would be to let Stan go.
It has been a complete shock and so sudden
but happening so quickly is really the best way.

Stan has been getting older; in December
he had his last check-up
with the Vet who was happy with him but
Stans spondylosis was causing his back legs to be stiffer -
he took supplements for this
and Stan couldn't manage the longer walks
but still enjoyed his walk everyday and had his cheeky
Boy moments with Alfie and spent alot of his time
cuddled up to Kate but was still our young crazy Stan
and would have his funny 5mins playing with his toys
in the house and would still have a little run on his walks.

On the 3rd of March we celebrated Stans 4th Gotcha day
where he had liver cake for breakfast,
strawberries (he loves them!)
in the day, some new toys to play with which he did and
I remember he went crazy with them!
Bryan and I took him for a walk midday
just us and Hugo - Stans little Brother
and then he had fillet steak for his dinner!
So that was only weeks ago and he had a lovely day.

We've had a wonderful 4 years with Stan, he was my Dog
and I'm going to miss him so much
but we have so many lovely memories
and Stans on holidays every year to various beaches,
plus festivals and camping and had lots of fun.

I'm so pleased our Baby boy Hugo got to meet Stan,
Stan has been wonderful with his human Brother.

It happened so quickly and suddenly but Stan
went being cuddled by his Dad
and being held by me looking into my eyes
being told how loved he was.
He'll now be young and mobile again
and I'm sure he's reunited with his Toby and Lucy now.

Thank you both so much for looking after Stan
before he came to his forever home
and letting us adopt our little Stan
and have the wonderful times that we did with Stan

Snowdrop
has left us to go to Rainbow Bridge.
She was an 8 week old kitten who came into our care
on the 2nd March
and was fostered by one of our wonderful foster families.
She had been purchased by the owner
from a very questionable seller of kittens
who has now been reported to the RSPCA to investigate.
The new owners felt they had made a mistake buying her
and asked if we could take her in for rehoming,
she had had diarea since they got her.
We took her straight to the vets,
she was very confident and happy in herself
but she deteriorated and 2 days later had collapsed
and had to be put to sleep.
Snowdrops death could have been prevented
if she had been taken to a vet as soon as she had problems.
Please, if anyone buys an animal, especially one so young,
from any source please ensure the siblings and parents
are healthy and well
and that you take your pet straight to the vets for a check up
and to be vaccinated against any viruses.
Animals should not be sold if they are poorly.
If you have concerns about anyone selling animals
that are kept in bad conditions and are poorly
then please ring the
RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 immediately.
Rest in peace and have fun at the bridge baby Snowdrop

Minnie
I still can't believe that she was nearly 12 years old,
she looked and behaved like a dog half her age!
When she had the liver tumour removed two years ago
they did say that there were other small tumours on the liver,
but that it was a slow growing type.
I did everthing I could to help build up her immune system
to help her body fight the cancer.
She made a brilliant recovery and they were amazed,
at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket,
that she was still alive and looking so well 2 years on
and she looked very well right up to the end
but unfortunately she developed bone cancer
and that as you know spreads very quickly!
Minnie really was a very important part of our life
and we miss her very much.
I had a card from the staff at the Animal Health Trust
who were brilliant! This is part of what they wrote...
'Minnie was a fabulous dog
and you gave her a great life after her rescue.
We were lucky to know her.'
That is how I feel, we were so lucky to have had her in our life,
if only for a short while.'
Thank you for allowing that to happen!!
Every best wish for the work that you do.
Jenny and Ben xx
RIP Minnie

RIP Sheba 30th June 2010

Sheba was a cruelty case a few years ago and was rehabilitated
whilst in RSPCA care
at Windyway when we used their facility.
Please refer to this link to see the offenders.

Sheba found a wonderful home back in 2006 with new doting parents,
doggy and feline friends; she had a great life.
Sheba’s owners are the parents of Gill
(who was a dedicated Trustee of our branch for many years
alongside her husband Michael).
Sheba sadly passed away after having her spleen
and a tumour from her liver removed.
This is a great loss to all who was involved with Sheba,
we can’t thank her family enough for taking Sheba under their wings
and working on the problems she had as a result of the cruelty
and neglect she was inflicted with.
Sheba was a beautiful dog with a wonderful nature
and will be missed by all.

Here’s a few words from Gill:
Our family had the honour to care for this sweet creature
for all too short a time.
Just imagine, over half her life living with that couple,
tethered on a pile of her own mess at the end of the garden
and systematically starved -
even if it was ignorance, that was no excuse and Sheba certainly
didn't deserve it.

When she first arrived she would not go out through the kitchen door
into the back garden
for fear that she would be tethered outside.
It took her months to relax sufficiently to use the back door.
She was pretty 'wild' indoors, getting over-excited
and ripping the piping off the 3 piece suite in front of you
(definitely not boredom or separation anxiety, just wildness).

Once she got used to the fact that the 2 cats, Toots and Tuss,
were not for chasing, she quickly grew to love them
and she spent hours trying to nuzzle them, especially
Tuss who was more tolerant of being nudged and loved.

Sheba got on well with Charlie the lurcher
and Bonzo the beardie cross
and she also never had a cross word with my Glimmer.
Gemma and Jade are 'in your face' type dogs,
but Sheba even accepted them.
Her very bestest friend was a small wire-haired JRT
called Harley who until recently lived next door.

She loved to woof at the birds through the french doors,
almost doing a vertical take-off herself, in her excitement.
On her walks, mainly on neighbouring farmland,
Sheba loved to occupy herself along the hedgerows -
Probably trying to get little birds to fly out!
Another absolute favourite game
to play on the walk was to 'bounce' (she really did bounce, high too!)
onto thick tufts of grass in the field where she had identified
a field bee or two!
Her concentration in this task was something to behold.

Sheba had lovely soft fur to match her gentle, loving nature
and her longhaired tail swished beautifully -
The best GSD tail ever.

Sheba was a mummy's girl at heart,
accompanying my stepmother to and from the kitchen -
this was not to scrounge, she really wasn't greedy,
it was Sheba simply being a very loyal companion
to her much loved mummy.

Sadly Jasper was put to sleep Tuesday 6th April.
Jasper came into our care Nov 08
because his owner had died and he was found with the body
by a family member,
a very sad reason for Jasper coming into rescue,
he was in a lovely family foster home
as he was too old for kennels, they gave him a new lease of life!
A wonderful family adopted Jasper
and gave him lots of love and a great home,
here are a few words from them:
We Just wanted to let you know that Jasper
sadly passed away on Tuesday after a short illness.
He deteriorated very rapidly over 2 to 3 weeks.
First of all we thought his arthritis was playing up
but he gradually got worse.
The vet thinks he had a tumour
and he had also developed a heart murmur.
Over the weekend he stopped eating and
could barely walk or stand up.
We decided it was kindest to let him go.
We're all really upset
but have no regrets from having him
because he was so lovely
and brought us and him a lot of happiness.
I've attached a picture of him
enjoying a walk at Tittesworth reservoir.
We had a wonderful 15 months with him,
he was such a lovely dog.
We only wish we'd had more time with him.
Thanks for letting him be part of our lives,Rest in Peace Jasper

Buster, for the very short time you were with us
despite the problems, we loved you and cared for you
and we are sorry you were laid to rest on the
14th December 09
whilst in our care and not in a new loving home.
We are sorry you came from a terrible home
who didn't treat you right and caused the problems
you suffered with,it was not your fault.
But you are at peace now
and we know you are so happy
and that makes us happy.
You were beautiful and you didn't deserve
to be dealt the cards you were given in life,
this makes us very sad,
time and time again we see the consequences
of ill treatment towards mans best friend.
Rest in Peace Buster, we miss you

Billy was a wonderful but ill little kitten.
He had a wonderful character and won over both
of his fosterers to his charms!
Sadly Billy was just too poorly to get better.
Even though he was a fighter and battled through
and everything possible was tried to help him we eventually
made the decision to let Billy go peacefully to sleep
and end his suffering.
He was only with us a short while
but he will be remembered by us all!
Comments from his fosterer:Little Billy was absolutely adorable,
he was such a beautiful kitten & so sweet natured.
Even though he was only here for a little while,
he'd made a huge impression as left little paw prints
on the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him
he's greatly missed x RIP Billy

Tess had a very sad story to tell,
the victim of severe beatings by her owner
finally witnessed in public which left her unconscious;
she found herself in our care.
Sadly she was in kennels for several years
being over looked,
we guess this was due to her breed, age
and constant barking and lunging at visitors,
she was very fearful of men especially.
Tess was a favourite of mine
as I could see past that,
I walked her a few times a week
all the while she was in kennels
and even took her home.
Then one day this lovely couple saw Tess on the Oldies Club
and well...the rest is history. She settled in wonderfully
and forged a great friendship
with the 'man of the house',
we would never have thought! She had a wonderful life,
safe and happy and loved.

There really are special people
out there for dogs like Tess,

we never give up searching and waiting

and we hope that this story opens your eyes
into considering adopting an older dog,
especially those like Tess.
Tess will always have a place in my heart,
she was always in my thoughts
and always will be"
RIP Tess

Stan and Alfie both seem to be getting on with things
so far after losing their Lucy.
I know they'll miss her as they both adored Lucy
and Lucy adored her Boys.
We have so many lovely memories of Lucy

and are focusing on those.
Thank you so much for rescuing Lucy

and allowing us to let Lucy
become part of our family - our Baby Girl

and for the help and advice you've given.
We're really going to miss our Lucy

but are comforted knowing she didn't suffer
and having all the lovely memories

we've made in the last 18 months together.
I believe Sally and Toby
are looking after Lucy now.”
RIP LUCY

We were delighted to have him for the short time
that he was with us

he was the sweetest cat we’ve ever had
and we just wish

we’d been able to take care of him for longer
R.I.P Oscar

What matters to us is that we know
Skip was so happy and content,

that he had a wonderful few weeks,
probably the best he ever had in his life,

he told us his story of a hard life he once had,
but he forgot all about that and was taken under Ruth’s wing
where he was protected and loved.
Skip, you touched our hearts and left paw prints there,
never to be replaced
but we will add to them by helping other dogs like you.

You were a very special old man
and who will never be forgotten.

Tai wasn't just our dog, he was one of the family,
and losing him has left a very big hole in our hearts.
At least we know that he is no longer in any pain,
and we know that we gave him almost 2 years
of happiness
that he had not had before.

We will miss and love him every day

she had some lovely last months with you both and with me.
She had even made friends in the building
because in her last days she discovered The Corridor
and would just go and sit out there,
greeting anyone who walked past
and trying to follow them into their flats!

Zoe, you will be missed

She was very ill with tumours in her bowels
and after her condition
taking a turn for the worse
recently
the decision was made
to let her pass away peacefully.

She passed away peacefully in her foster home.
Meg was a lovely, affectionate cat
who will be very much missed.

RIP Meg

Rocky was 15 1/2 years old when he came into our care,
he was with us for 3 weeks
when he suffered with what we believe to be
a haemorrhage.

He was sadly pts on the morning of Saturday 14th March.
He was a special old man
who we hope had a happy time in his foster home.

We all feel very sad that Rocky has gone,
especially under such circumstances as he would've been in pain.
He is now at that special place called Rainbow Brige,
young, pain free and happy. We will miss you Rocky

Toby was so loved and I know Toby knew that.
Toby touched so many people.
I'm pleased knowing that before we got Toby,
he was rescued by the RSPCA
and knew there was nice Humans
and he was safe and loved at Windyway
and the same here in his home.
He was spoilt but he deserved to be!
we wanted Toby to experience
as much as he could and he did.
It wasn't just with material things or food!
but love, time and attention
R.I.P Toby

He and his new owners had 18 wonderful months
of happiness together. Branch Trustees now retired,
say they never regretted adopting Likey
and that he really was a wonderful dog
and that they highly recommend
to anyone looking for a rescue dog to adopt an oldie.
They also adopted to oldie girls from another rescue
who kept Likey on his toes!
The photo of him on his bed
was the day he arrived into their home,
the one of his beautiful face was taken in the last week.
Likey, you will be missed more than you know

We are so sorry to Tinkers owner for her loss,
it’s devastating to think that a dog can die so young.
Tinker originally came from a litter of 11 puppies
who Gucci, a Doberman X, gave birth to.
She, was thin and tired,
sought help from a member of public

on a duel carriage way,
she led this person to her litter of pups
under a caravan.
All came into RSPCA care where
loving homes were found.

Tinker was a big bundle of energy and fun,
a typical lively young dog who you could never tire out,
an affectionate, cheeky but loving dog.
You are no doubt sorely missed Tin778uiker,
we hope you are having fun at the Rainbow.
